Cover of Tafsir al-Mizan, Volume 36

Volume thirty-six provides an in-depth commentary on five Qur’anic chapters: Sūras Muḥammad (Chapter 47), al-Fatḥ (Chapter 48), al-Ḥujurāt (Chapter 49), Qāf (Chapter 50), and al-Dhāriyāt (Chapter 51). These chapters explore themes of faith, divine mercy, societal ethics, resurrection, and divine justice, offering insights into the Prophet Muḥammad’s mission and the responsibilities of believers.

In Sūrah Muḥammad, the chapter contrasts the qualities and actions of the faithful with those of the faithless, examining their ultimate fates. ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabaʿī emphasizes the consequences of hypocrisy and disobedience while warning believers against inclining toward the disbelievers. The chapter also discusses the rules of warfare and the importance of striving for the preservation of divine truth.

Sūrah al-Fatḥ recounts the events surrounding the Treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah and emphasizes God’s favor upon His Messenger and the faithful. ʿAllāmah reflects on the spiritual significance of this “clear victory” and the promise of divine reward for those who demonstrate faith and righteousness. The chapter concludes by highlighting the noble qualities of the Prophet Muḥammad (s.a.w.) and his companions, as described in the Torah and Gospel.

The commentary on Sūrah al-Ḥujurāt examines the ethical and social teachings of Islam, including proper etiquette with God and His Messenger, interpersonal interactions within a community, and the criteria for superiority among individuals. ʿAllāmah highlights the significance of brotherhood, mutual respect, and the essence of true faith and submission.

In Sūrah Qāf, ʿAllāmah explores the themes of resurrection, divine knowledge, and the power of creation. The chapter emphasizes the inevitability of the Day of Judgment and the consequences of human actions. Reflections on God’s omnipotence and the intricate design of the universe serve as reminders of the Creator’s authority and wisdom.

Sūrah al-Dhāriyāt focuses on the Day of Recompense and presents arguments for the resurrection through signs in the heavens, the earth, and human souls. ʿAllāmah examines the destruction of past nations that rejected divine guidance and concludes with a powerful verse: “I did not create the jinn and the humans except that they may worship Me” (51:56). This verse encapsulates the Qur’anic vision of humanity’s purpose and its ultimate accountability to God.

Throughout this volume, ʿAllāmah engages in subtle theological and philosophical discussions, addressing issues such as free will, divine justice, and the moral and spiritual dimensions of faith. He integrates these reflections with practical lessons for individuals and societies, offering a holistic understanding of the Qur’anic worldview.

Volume thirty-six of Tafsīr al-Mīzān provides profound insights into the relationship between faith, ethics, and divine guidance, making it an invaluable resource for those seeking a deeper connection with the Qur’an and its teachings.
