This chapter discusses a variety of themes such as judgments or verdicts, manners, and characteristics. Thus a part of it relates to the judgment or verdict regarding al-zihar (a specific pagan divorce practice), the judgment or verdict regarding secret conversations, and the judgment or verdict regarding the manner of sitting in a gathering. This is while another part relates to the characteristics of those who act contrary to and oppose God and His Messenger (saw), and those who befriend the enemies of the faith. It also describes those among the believers who guard against befriending the enemies of the faith, and promises them a handsome reward in the world and the hereafter.

This chapter is of Medinan provenance in light of the (literary) context of its verses.
