The meanings of the verses of this chapter in their different sections clearly apply to the account of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah which took place in the seventh year of the Hijrah and the events that took place around this with events such as the Bedouins recalcitrance, the idolaters’ obstruction of the pilgrimage, and the pledge of allegiance given beneath the tree as detailed in traditions. We shall discuss some of these in the study of the narrations below, God-willing.

The purpose of this chapter is to expound the favor God has bestowed upon His Messenger through the clear victory He granted him on this journey, and upon the faithful amongst those who accompanied him. It also serves to extol their virtue and promise a beauteous reward to those of them who believe and do righteous deeds. The chapter is Medinan.
